Renewing Worship
The ELCA Hymnal project which will produce a Hymn Book entitled Evangelical Lutheran Worship has produced some trends detailed here by Gracia Grindal at
www.luthersem.edu/ggrindal/OpenLtr_GG_Dec2003.pdf
http://www.luthersem.edu/ggrindal/language.htm.
While some classics are kept in place, some are changed, and some aren't there altogether. I would prefer this hymnal be used http://www.reclaimlutheranworship.org/introductory.php
The worship service also shouldn't be centered on our efforts for human justice, as ELH has many hymns that emphaize this theme. Our Worship should be centered on our forgiveness precisely from the fact that God didn't give us what we deserve, but instead died on the cross for our sins.
I have not had a chance to review ELH in depth. But the report of having 10 communion settings, I would question. Although I am not as much of an absolutist on this issue as some this seems to be quite excessive, as what a communion setting should be an sermon-an the words of instution, and then you recieve the means of grace.
This along with the Grindal letter should express my concerns in full.
