Heresy Watch #4

From the Lutheran magazine ''Letters to the Editor"-For December 2005-PG.65

A letter writer named Kelly Donahue of Albuqerque, NM writes

"I read the article about Isalm and Christianity(July, Page 12). Many Evangelical Christians want to blame an entire religion for the acts of a few terrorists. MUSLIMS BELIVE IN THE SAME GOD I DO AND ARE GOOD PEOPLE.

boldness added for emphasis.

I need to address this issue. Since I went to a clergy conference this week where the presenter said basically "All religions are the same", and "If you worship a tree, or a rock or a deity you are all worshipping God.

Granted that is pluralism, where as the Letter Writer doesn't go quite that far. There are more issues, I could address with the letter, but wouldn't for lack of time.

The fact is that Christians, Muslims, Jews, and Hindus don't worship the same God. Christians believe God cannot be understood apart from Jesus Christ (John 1:1, Romans 10:9, John 10:30). Throughout the New Testament similar attributes are given to both God and Jesus. Muslims, and Jews both strongly reject any notion that Jesus was God. The Lutheran Confessions strongly teach that one can not know God apart from Jesus Christ (AC XX, AAC IV, LC-Creed). So the assertion here is one never found in scripture. Syncretism is getting to be so serious, I should address it more in depth.

Stew, Who was the presenter at that conference? Sounds like Matthew Fox...don't you just squirm in your chair when you hear stuff like that. I just really wonder...couldn't they find ANYBODY more upbuilding for us pastors to listen to than that speaker and Matthew Fox???
