Virgin Birth Q & A
Q: Is it neccessary to preach on the Virgin Birth in a Christmas Sermon
A: The Virgin Birth (Or the Incarnation) is one of the most important doctrines of the Christian Faith since it asserts that Jesus Christ is God in Flesh. People assert that you can deny the Virgin Birth and assert that Jesus is God in Flesh. I don't know how you really can...
If Jesus was conceived by two human parents as every other child, he would be a human being. Then the question is when did Jesus become God? You could say the Holy Spirit magically effected the Sperm, but this is not Biblical. You could say Jesus became God at some time, in his life, this Non-Biblical Heresy of Adoptionism which was condemned in 798 as a Heresy by Pope Leo III.
If Jesus wasn't God in Flesh, then he would have sinned since all people have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23), scripture describes human nature as bound to sin (Romans 8:5-8, Romans 7:17-18, John 8:34) , but Christ lived a Sinless life (1 Peter 2:22-24) so he could defeat sin and death by his resurrection (Philippians 3:9-11).
If Christ was fully human he would have sinned as every other human, and deserved death as every other human, hence not been able to overcome death.
So is it neccessary , yes. The Virgin Birth is difficult to preach on for some since it doesn't open itself up to cute analogies or stories. But the fact that God became flesh couldn't have happened without a Virgin Birth, and we celebrate on the Christmas season that it is this God who redeemed us.
