Davinci Code Review
I was on my way back from a Minnesota Twins game yesterday, when My Dad wanted to know if I could go out for dinner with my Mom and my grandma. To which I said "Yes", but he said we would be eating after watching the Davinci Code. It's not something I would see on my own, and I hadn't read the book but I knew it's basic misleading theological content. So here is my review.
The Good: It does have a very intresting storyline with quite a few surpising plot turns. If someone likes murder mysteries- combined with quasi-history they probably would like this movie. I think the Critics that ripped it as a flim give it a raw deal. I actually enjoyed sitting through it as a movie-goer. I will say this about Dan Brown his next book The Solomon Key is going to be written to expose Free-Masonry.
The Bad:This blog was started to expose heresy and this movie was ripe with it. Such as Jesus had a child with Mary Magdalene named Sarah, that they were married, and Mary was supposed to be the leader of the Church not Peter. Brown's sources non-canonical gospels like the Gospel of Mary Magdalene and the Gospel of Phillip. The Gospel of Mary Magdalene was a second century Gnostic Gospel used to promote the idea that Jesus came to help us discover our own goodness, so we may be liberated from time. the Gospel of Philip emphaized the sacramental nature of Sexual Intercourse. These books were rejected in the Early Church due to their sharp contrast to Paul's writings and earlier Gospel accounts. The movie also says Constaine was a pagan before his death-bed who only choose Christianity to avoid violence while also promoting Paganism on the side. This book also states there was no basis for the decision at the Council of Nicea to declare Jesus divine. The real goal of Jesus was to continue the Church through Mary. But this was hidden because of a fear of goddess worship. This movie also denies the Resurrection. This movie denies the Entire Christian Faith. I'm not going to comment on the Opus Dei and the Priory as dueling sects, since this isn't a great area of my knowledge.
Would I go watch it: Hard to say, the story is actually good. The theology underlying this movie is deadly. But if one knows this going in then it might be worth seeing.
